When not to communicate electronically

While email is beneficial nearly at all times, there are times in a business environment where face-to-face communication is better. According to Hughes (2003), “controversial or negative information is best delivered in person to minimize the possibility of miscommunication” (para. 3).

Also, negotiations are better off done in person considering that according to Library Mosaics, an estimated 81% of face-to-face negotiations reach a resolution while 50% of negotiations done electronically hit a dead end (2003, p. 27).

Another thing to consider when choosing what communication medium is best for the message is length. A face-to-face conversation can sometimes be better then overwhelming a coworker with emails (Hughes, 2003).

I know that there are many times when I have communicated with others electronically, and they misrepresent my message (or vice versa). Did you find any more research regarding this aspect of nettiquette? Why do you suppose this misrepresentation might occur?

You say that there are times when electronic communication is not as good as face to face communication. Do you think that we are developing electronic communication so rapidly that this theory may change in the future? Meaning, do you think that there will be a time when we will only use electronic communication because it will be much better than face to face?

Answer: I agree that electronic communication is growing and expanding at an incredible rate. As I mentioned in an earlier post, a U.S. Department of Commerce report concluded that more than half of the U.S. is online (Sullivan, 2006). However, I do not feel that electronic communication will ever completely substitute for, or be better then, face-to-face. They are two different types of communication and can serve different purposes and while although electronic communication can sometimes be more convenient, I feel that face-to-face communication is essential to us as humans. According to Hughes (2003), face-to-face communication can help to develop interpersonal business relationships and is usually more effective in coming to a consensus.

(Just so you know, it has absoloutely NOTHING to do with genetics or some secret exercise and absolutely EVERYTHING to around "how" they eat.)

BTW, I said "HOW", and not "what"...
